Iylia Jamil celebrated his birthday this week with a comfortable win in the RM180,000 PGM Darulaman Closed Championship today.

Capturing his third victory on the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour at Darulaman Golf & Country Club in Kedah, Iylia had every reason to smile, more so with him turning 25 years old on Thursday.

“It really does feel great to win here because this is like my birthday present,” he said after securing the title with a four-stroke winning margin and picking up a cheque worth RM30,600.

Having shot to the top of the leaderboard after yesterday’s third round, Iylia carded a closing day three-under 69 to finish on 15-under 273.

Khor Kheng Hwai, who led the PGM Tour’s penultimate tournament of the season over the first two days, returned with a 70 for an 11-under 277 total and second place.

Wilson Choo (69) and R. Nachimuthu (70) were joint third another shot back on 10-under 278, while Abel Tam signed for the low round of the day after shooting a five-under-par 67. He finished alone in fifth place, on eight-under 280.

With wins at the 2011 PGM Kinrara Classic and 2012 Rahman Putra Classic, Iylia was understandably happy to have won here and he acknowledged it when saying: “I am just pleased that I have won again.

“I’ve played some golf this season but was not able to close out any of the events when I was in contention. But here I went all the way and I’m really very happy.

“Coming in the week of my birthday makes it a little extra special,” he added. “It’s not easy to win on this Tour, so to get the job done here is really satisfying.”

Iylia added that he was looking forward to take this form into next week’s season-ending PGM Maybank Players’ Championship at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club. The RM275,000 tournament starts on Thursday.

Khor Kheng Wai too said he was happy with his week’s performance despite coming up just short.

“I played well this week as I struck the ball solidly but I didn’t get some of the putts to drop over the last three that should have, and that made a difference.

“I putted well on the first day but after that my putter went cold. But I am still happy with the effort and hope I can continue with it at KLGCC next week,” said the 31-year-old from Penang, who achieved a breakthrough win in his home state in September.

Abel Tam, meanwhile, said he too has drawn positives from his visit to Darulaman.

“I’m really how I played here, particularly over the last two rounds,” said Tam. “I will leave here with many positives for my game and I hope I can continue like this next week.
