Kuala Lumpur, April 15: Malaysia’s Nicholas Fung lifted his third Asian Development Tour (ADT) title after prevailing in a three-way play-off against compatriot Gavin Green and Japan’s Masaru Takahashi at the PGM UMW Championship on Saturday.

Fung dropped a bogey on his 72nd hole to close with a two-under-par 69 and was forced to go the distance with Green and Masaru, who carded equal 70s, after the trio were tied on 12-under-par 272 total in regulation play at the TPC Kuala Lumpur’s east course.

The 26-year-old Fung, who was crowned the ADT Order of Merit champion in 2013, emerged triumphant after rolling in an eight-footer for birdie on the first extra hole held on the par-four 18 at the RM200,000 (approx. US$44,600) ADT event.

Green and Masaru, who had held a one-shot lead heading into the final round, bowed out with a par and a bogey respectively to settle for a share of second place at the PGM UMW Championship, which is the fourth leg of the ADT schedule this season.

After the late stumble, Fung, who claimed a top-10 finish on the ADT last month, was determined not let the opportunity slip out of his hands again in the sudden-death play-off.

“I got ahead of myself on the 18 in regulation play. I was in a rush. I hit a wayward drive into the left rough and made a bogey there. It was really gloomy out there and I wanted to finish before the rain comes.

“When I head back to the 18 for the play-off, I told myself to just go for it. I had a good drive and I hit my second shot to within eight feet. I am glad I got the job done. It has been awhile since I last won on the ADT,” said the bespectacled Sabahan, who claimed his second ADT win in 2015.

Fung overcame a sore arm and the lengthy weather suspensions to claim what was his 16th professional title since joining the play-for-pay ranks in 2010. He had to play a total of 28 holes on Saturday due to earlier weather disruptions in the week.

“I am still feeling pain in the right arm but it’s getting better and I am slowly recovering. I was prepared for the weather suspensions actually, knowing the weather here in Kuala Lumpur. I just stayed patient. This win is a great confidence boost for me. I hope to carry on my good form onto the Asian Tour in the next two weeks,” Fung added.

Fung takes home a winner’s prize purse of US$7,954. He will also receive six Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points following his victory.

Like all other ADT events, the top six players and ties will also receive OWGR points based on a sliding scale.

The ADT, which is celebrating its seventh season this year, will reward the top-five finishers on the Order of Merit at the end of this season with Asian Tour cards for 2018.

Periasamy Gunasegaran was a humble man. Stemming from a lesser beginning, he took this game on and turned it into a career. His mission! A career that took him to stardom.
After winning The South East Asian Games Gold, Guna took on the pro ranks winning on multiple occasions. His wins came from all over the region.

Guna was best known for the 1994 Malaysian Open where he heroically held a 20foot birdie to force a playoff. He took the sudden death to 8 holes before succumbing.
Guna was also in a 'head to head' clash with the the very accomplished USA World Cup Team with M. Ramayah in Puerto Rico. Matching Team USA shot for shot and eventually finishing top 10.

Guna will be remembered for his heroic battles and how he helped lift the game when it needed.
RIP to a Malaysian golf icon.

Port Dickson [NEGERI SEMBILAN]: Daeng Abdul Rahman Abdul Aziz announced his arrival on the professional scene with a grandstand finish on Saturday to emerge victorious at the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Port Dickson Championship.

The galleries roared in approval as the rookie professional buried a 15-foot birdie putt at the finishing hole to defeat reigning Order of Merit champion Nicholas Fung by a single stroke at the Port Dickson Golf & Country Club.

The 17-year-old signed off with a flawless 68 to clinch his second PGM Tour title in only his third professional start, with a four-day haul of 12-under 272.

Fung failed to capitalise on an inspired start as he dropped a costly bogey on the penultimate hole to settle for second with a 68 of its own.

The Sabahan was four shots clear of the trio of Wafiyuddin Abdul Manaf, who fired a blistering five-under 66 to tie Amir Nazrin Jailani (69) and Nachimuthu Ramasamy (69) for third.

Ben Leong, who began the final round three shots off the lead, could only muster a level-par 71 to slip to sole sixth with a six-under 278 overall.

Leading final results (Par-71)
272 – Daeng Abdul Rahman Abdul Aziz 69-68-67-68
273 – Nicholas Fung 67-68-70-68
277 – Wafiyuddin Abd Manaf 66-75-70-66, Amir Nazrin Jailani 67-70-71-69, Nachimuthu Ramasamy 66-72-70-69
278 – Ben Leong 69-70-68-71
279 – Tan Chien Hau 74-69-68-68, Sukree Othman 68-72-70-69
280 – Khor Kheng Hwai 72-70-67-71, Shahriffuddin Ariffin 72-69-67-72
281 – Airil Rizman Zahari 74-69-68-70, Danny Chia 73-68-69-71

Describing his win as something “special”, Daeng was pleasantly surprised to return to the winners’ circle so quickly into his professional career.

“This is a special victory and something to treasure because it has come so soon after I made the leap of faith in February. I knew I had it within me to win today but it was always going to be closely-fought. I’m just proud with the way I was able to absorb the early pressure by Nicholas and respond strongly at the end,” said Daeng, who holds the distinction of winning the Danau Championship in 2015 as an amateur.

The former national endured a frustrating front nine as he carded nine consecutive pars while Fung got off to a flyer – the Sabahan notching four birdies to lead  by three at the turn.

But it proved short-lived as Fung opened his back nine with back-to-back bogeys as Daeng drained a monstrous 25-footer for birdie on #11 to level the contest.

The pair traded a further birdie apiece before Fung uncharacteristically missed a short par putt on #17 to open the door for his younger challenger to re-take the lead for the first time all day.

“I managed three birdies on the back nine and they were all instrumental. The first birdie was really crucial for my confidence because I couldn’t buy a putt all day, despite striking the ball well. I knew that I had to birdie 16 to keep myself in the contest and when Nicholas dropped a shot on 17th, I knew I had a good chance.

“Nicholas ramped up the pressure when he birdied from close range after missing his eagle putt on the last. I was pretty unlucky with my third shot as it took a bad bounce off the apron, leaving me with a long putt for birdie. It came down to either sinking it or falling into a play-off – and I wasn’t keen on the second option,” he laughed.
