Kuala Lumpur, November 28: Janne Kaske of Finland rode on a hot start to win his second Asian Development Tour (ADT) title by five shots at the weather-shortened PMG MIDF KLGCC Championship on Saturday.

Kaske opened with four straight birdies before adding four more birdies against one bogey to finish on a superb seven-under-par 64 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club East course.

His winning total of 14-under-par 199 earned him US$8,143 and six valuable Official World Golf Ranking points at the RM200,000 (approximately US$50,000) event which is the penultimate stop on the ADT schedule this year.

Jordan Sherratt of Australia settled for second place following a 67 while Order of Merit leader Casey O’Toole (70) of the United States, Sam Cyr (67), Raphael De Sousa (69) of Switzerland and Thai duo Pijit Petchkasem (68) and Itthipat Buranatanyarat (68) shared third position on 205s.

Kaske’s victory propelled him to seventh position on the Order of Merit, two spots away from earning playing rights in the 2016 Asian Tour season with one more tournament to play. He trails fifth placed Masaru Takahashi of Japan by slightly over US$1,800.

The pressure on Kaske was evident as he turned in 30 but dropped his only shot of the day on the 13th hole when he hit his tee shot into the water. With so much to play for, he recovered superbly with birdies on 15, 16 and 18.

“This win feels almost more important than my first victory. The first one was special but given the circumstances on the Order of Merit, this definitely feels much better. I got a bit nervous towards the end and my hands were shaking because I knew how important this win would mean to me,” said Kaske.

“This win is going to give me a great opportunity to break into the top-five (on the Order of Merit) in the final event. I feel great because I knew I had to win one of the last two and to pull it off under pressure is great,” he added.

The 29-year-old won his first ADT title in May but has struggled to emulate his winning form until today. “I felt like I played the best possible golf I could. There was no breathing space and I had to make sure I kept making birdies,” he said.

“I’ve been getting off to bad starts and I felt like every round I had to fight back to get back to under-par so the hot start I had today really helped,” said Kaske.

The ADT’s next and final stop will be at the Baht 3 million (approximately US$91,000) Boonchu Ruangkit Championship which will be staged at the Rancho Chanrvee Golf & Country Resort from December 24 to 27 in Thailand.

With the Olympic Games looming in 2016 where golf will be reintroduced as a medal sport, players in the region could earn their spots in Rio de Janeiro by earning Official World Golf Ranking points through the Asian Tour and ADT.

Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, November 21: Chanat Sakulpolphaisan of Thailand became the 19th first-time Asian Development Tour (ADT) winner this season when he triumphed at the PGM Nilai Springs Championship on Saturday.

The 25-year-old shot a four-under-par 67 to win the RM200,000 (approximately US$50,000) ADT event with a score of 18-under-par 266 at the Nilai Springs Golf and Country Club.

Jordan Sherratt of Australia finished two shots back as he settled for his second runner-up result this year following a 66. Malcolm Kokocinski (69) of Sweden closed with a 69 to end his campaign in third position, five shots from the winner.

Chanat, who held the overnight lead, was flawless in a round of four birdies as he peppered the flags for close range birdies. His longest birdie putt of the day was a 15-footer on the 14th hole.

The victory was a huge reward for the in-form Thai, who had secured two straight top-10 results before the PGM Nilai Springs Championship.

“It feels great and awesome to win. I felt a bit nervous but I stayed focus. It wasn’t easy but I’m glad I did it. This is a very big win for me,” said Chanat, who played collegiate golf for Mississippi college before turning professional last year.

Chanat believes the win will be a confidence booster as he aims to earn an Asian Tour card through Qualifying School next year. He missed the grade earlier this year but has improved by gaining valuable experience on the ADT.

“Like many professionals, I dream of winning. I want to win on the Asian Tour but this is a big step in my career. Before turning professional, I watched so many Thai players including Kiradech Aphibarnrat win. I hope I can have a successful career like him in the future,” said Chanat.

SUNGAI BULOH, November 15: Sukree Othman snatched a winning birdie at the last to wrap up a wire-to-wire victory at the prestigious PGA Championship of Malaysia on Sunday.

The 39-year-old traded four birdies against two bogeys, including one on the penultimate hole when his approach shot found the water hazard, to close with a solid two-under 70 at Kelab Rahman Putra Malaysia.

Sukree totalled 13-under 275 to finish one clear of Airil Rizman Zahari, who battled valiantly in defeat with his fourth consecutive 69 of the week.

Nachimuthu Ramasamy, who shot a tournament best of eight-under 64 on Friday, carded a six-under 66 to finish third on 277 in the RM200,000 tournament, organised by the Professional Golf Association of Malaysia.

Shaaban Hussin (71) was a further shot back in 278 while Kemarol Baharin (70) settled for sole fifth on 279.

Sukree, who led from the opening round, set-up his first win in over 28 months with a brilliant chip from 45 yards on the closing hole for a tap-in birdie.

"I'm a relieved man! After two years of grinding hard and coming close on so many occasions, to finally win again feels really sweet. It is a real honour to add my name to a list of greats that have won this storied championship," said Sukree.

The overnight leader was placed under immense pressure by Airil, who snatched two birdies in a flawless front nine 34 to move into a share of the lead.

But Sukree birdied the 10th and 13th to regain his advantage as 2003 champion Airil dropped three bogeys on a trot from the 13th.

"Leading from day one gave me the momentum I needed and eventhough, Airil
pulled level with me at the halfway turn, I stuck to my gameplan and made two crucial birdies to give myself some breathing space," he added.

In what proved to be the turning point of the contest, Sukree salvaged an unlikely bogey on the 17th, draining a 30-foot downhill putt to stay alongside Airil, who had charged back with two straight birdies.

"I thought I had messed it up with my second shot on the 17th. My ball was in a bad lie in the rough and I didn't get a clean contact. Next thing, I know I was taking relief and pitched it to about 30 feet from the pin.

"My heart was racing as I was staring at a dramatic two-shot swing in Airil's favour with only one hole to play but I stayed calm, hit my putt firmly and the rest is just history," added Sukree, who walked home with RM28,000 and a return ticket to Langkawi courtesy of Malindo Air for his effort.

Meanwhile, P. Gunasagaran won the two-day Senior PGA Championship of Malaysia by three strokes over Rusli Johari, returning with matching 72s to total even-par 144. He received RM4,500 for his victory.
